Achieving a Career Change

Development Officer, Not-for-Profit, Melbourne, Australia

How an experienced leader navigated a major career change, exited a business well, and stepped into a new role with confidence.

Michelle helped me get to the point of having confidence to approach a new role. I hadn’t really been to a job interview in my life! I now have a new career.

The whole scenario could’ve been very messy, but I managed to keep my relationships intact.

The Challenge

This client had built a successful, award-winning business over the past decade and had several employees. She was tired but not ready to retire. She’d been in the same industry for decades and wanted a career change –she wanted to leave the business and move into a role in the not-for-profit sector so she could give back more.

She was extremely concerned about how challenging the situation could be if she were to close the doors on her business and move from self-employment and business owner to employee. It’d been years since she’d looked for a job. She’s also a self-confessed procrastinator. She wasn’t sure what to do.

She reached out to Michelle to  help her think through the decision, navigate the professional and relational implications, and manage the transition.

The Solution

One-to-one executive coaching focused on career transition, decision-making, and professional identity.

The Results

Armed with enhanced self-awareness and confidence in her decision, she closed her business and pursued the new career she desired. And she did it with grace. Moreover, she interviewed successfully and left with all her work relationships intact.

She placed all of her staff into new positions and organisations they love. She left, as she’d always hoped, with a strong network behind her and a positive future ahead.
